Pedernales Falls State Park

Pedernales Falls State Park

Pedernales Falls State Park.

About an hour west of Austin, out into the Texas Hill Country. Mid-60s, partly cloudy, a light breeze. Perfect.

The Trail In

The trail into the park — quiet, wide, and leading somewhere worth going.

The drive out from Austin takes you through rolling limestone hills, cedar and oak, ranches along the way. By the time we pulled in, we were already away from everything.

We took the trail down toward the river.

The Falls

Pedernales Falls is not a single dramatic waterfall. It’s a series of drops — the Pedernales River cutting down through layered limestone shelves, spilling from one flat rock table to the next, pooling in between.

The result is something you want to just stand and watch.

Looking out over the falls and the river canyon beyond.

Two happy people, right where we wanted to be.

Water pushing through the limestone channels — constant motion, carved over millennia.

The river pooling between the limestone shelves.

The Rocks

The limestone at Pedernales is something else. Smooth, pale, worn into curves and pockets by thousands of years of moving water. You walk out onto it like a wide open floor.

Potholes carved into the limestone by the river — each one perfectly shaped by water and time.

Standing on the limestone shelf, river pooling ahead.

The potholes — perfectly oval depressions drilled into the rock by swirling water and sediment over centuries — were everywhere. You could spend an hour just looking at them.

The Water

The river tumbling through a narrow channel.

The river widening into a deep green pool downstream.

Limestone canyon walls along the river — that round opening is a natural arch.

The falls up close — water and rock doing what they've always done.

We took lots of pictures. And we took time to just sit and be in nature.

Wonderful.

Next up: we’re heading to Buccaneer State Park, Mississippi. Stay tuned!
